Marquise Goodwin’s Huge Block: Illegal Or Not?

Texas wide receiver Marquise Goodwin laid a massive block during the second quarter of the Longhorns' matchup with the UCLA Bruins on Saturday. The block sent a UCLA cornerback flying, with his helmet coming off in the process. As a result of the hit, Goodwin was flagged for unnecessary roughness.

It was a play that left both fanbases steaming. UCLA fans were mad about a block they felt was malicious while Texas fans felt the play was clean and a flag was unwarranted. And after watching the gif of the block over and over, I still can’t tell if there was helmet-to-helmet contact.

Watch for yourself below the jump.

The block itself was certainly vicious and could have done serious damage. It’s one of the hardest hits I’ve seen all year, and caught the UCLA corner as he was looking the other way. But was it targeting or did Goodwin lead with his shoulder and hit the UCLA player in the numbers?
