There’s a decent case to be made that the first Saturday of college football season is the best day of the year for sports fans. And while not everyone would go that far, America’s pretty fired up, in general. That is, all of America except New England.
Who Cares About College Football Let’s Talk SAWX-YANKS
On a scale of one to five, with five being most excited, the entire country is “OHMYGOD F--- YEAH FOOTBALL TAILGATES BEER LONG WEEKEND AWESOME LET’S DO THIS.”
Meanwhile, up there in New England: “WHYYYYY AHH WE NAWT TAWKIN ABOUT THE FIRST PLACE SAWX? CAWWWWLEGE FOOTBALL IS FULL OF CHEATAHS AND OWAH SAWX AHHH A JUGGAHNAWT.”
Via National Geographic, the logic New England fans use to dismiss college sports.
In fairness to New England... As Ryan Hudson--SB Nation’s resident New England homer--points out, there are not many college football teams in New England, and UConn and Boston College are the lone schools that even compete at major D-1 levels. Why should New England get excited when they don’t even have a horse in the race?
But to that we can only say... GET OVER YOURSELVES, NEW ENGLAND. You don’t have to be ecstatic, but New England is pretty united in not giving a crap at all. And not having a great team is a lame excuse. Look at the map; half the states have worse teams than Boston College, and they’re not above getting a fired up with everyone else. EVEN ALASKA IS EXCITED. Because the first weekend of college football is pretty much the best.
Preseason rankings only matter for 25 teams. Everyone else is out in the great void. The fact we can be happy there, for a weekend at least, before the messy business of conference play, coaches on the hot seat, and weekly BCS standings is reassuring. It’s something to come back to the Saturday before Labor Day every year. It’s a reminder that this is a big country, with wide open spaces and offenses run from the pistol formation. There are three times as many games Saturday as there are on the first day of March Madness. Plus, you don’t need to skip work to watch it.
College football may not be perfect, but the first weekend is pretty great.
Just don’t go telling that to the BEST SPORTS FANS EVAH.
