Sugar Bowl Admits Illegal Campaign Contributions To Louisiana Governor

The Sugar Bowl had admitted to making illegal campaign contributions to the former governor of Louisiana in the form of tickets.

While it’s not on the same level as the Fiesta Bowl violations, the Sugar Bowl has been caught with their hand in the campaign contribution cookie jar as well.

HBO’s Real Sports program will air a segment Tuesday night that shows the bowl game purchased three $1,000 tickets honoring former Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco in 2004 and 2006.

In a statement, the Sugar Bowl confirmed that three tickets were purchased to two fundraising dinners honoring Blanco for a total of $3,000. After an internal audit, the bowl said it found “not other expenditures of this nature.” PlayoffPAC says the total was $5,000.
The bowl added that the money has been refunded. The $3,000 will be donated to the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Fund.

The news is embarrassing for Football Bowl Association spokesman Bruce Bernstein, who previously told Real Sports that the Fiesta Bowl scandal was “an isolated incident. I have never heard of another instance of where a bowl organization made a political contribution.”

Now he has.

Based on this revelation, PlayoffPAC has filed an IRS complaint against the Sugar Bowl.
