Georgia Tech Vs. North Carolina Final Score: Yellow Jackets Survive, 35-28, Stay Unbeaten

Georgia Tech’s 2011 offensive revival continued in the Yellow Jackets’ 35-28 win over North Carolina on Saturday, but the Yellow Jackets got a late assist from a new college football rule to beat the Tar Heels.

A potential game-tying North Carolina drive ended on a false start penalty that ran off the final nine seconds of the fourth quarter; that’s a particularly painful way for Carolina to lose because the Heels won last year’s Music City Bowl by kicking a field goal after a late penalty stopped the clock.

The Yellow Jackets deserved the win based on box score dominance, though. They continued their offensive proficiency against the Tar Heels, rolling up 495 yards of total offense to North Carolina’s 332, and converting 10 of 16 third downs.

Georgia Tech quarterback Tevin Washington completed 10 of 14 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown, and ran for an additional 73 yards and two scores in Tech’s triple option, which produced 311 rushing yards and four runners with more than 55 yards on the ground.

North Carolina quarterback Bryn Renner threw for 204 yards and two touchdowns in the loss, but he also threw two interceptions.
