Syracuse topped Toledo 33-30 in overtime, but the play everybody will be talking about (or lamenting, depending on what side you're on) came in the final minutes of regulation. Trailing 27-23 with a couple of minutes left in the game, Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib found Alec Lemon in the end zone. Ross Krautman came on for the PAT ... and definitely appeared to miss it wide left. Watch the video and decide for yourself:
Toledo Vs. Syracuse Final Score: Suspect PAT Helps Orange To Overtime Win, 33-30
After reviewing the play, Big East officials called it good. Toledo quickly marched down the field, but after getting as close as the eight-yard line they had to settle for a field goal with just three seconds left on the clock. Had the PAT call gone the other way, it would have won the game. Instead, it sent the game to overtime.
Unfortunately for the Rockets, things went south quickly in the extra period: Toledo quarterback Austin Dantin threw an interception on the very first play, giving Syracuse the ball. After a handful of conservative runs, the Orange called upon Krautman to convert a 28-yard chip shot for the win, which he handled with ease.
The Rockets fall to 1-3, but that doesn’t tell half the story. Sandwiched between last week’s 40-15 beatdown by Boise State are two extremely close losses against tough opponents, including a 27-22 loss to Ohio State on Sept. 10. If they continue to play as well as they have to date, they’ll pad their record once they start conference play in the MAC next week.
