For the second time in three weeks, Toledo played well enough to knock off an AQ-conference team on the road. But this time, an official’s error may have cost the Rockets the win.

A darn shame! Presuming “proper action” means somebody will get a stiff talking-to and then some, plus the Rockets will be given the chance to replace DePaul in the Big East. They kind of offer that to everybody after every newsworthy event, though.

The Toledo Rockets hit a last-second field goal at the Carrier Dome on Saturday afternoon, knotting the game at 30 and forcing overtime with the Syracuse Orange. It should’ve been the game-winner. Just minutes earlier, following a Syracuse touchdown, the Orange were credited with a successful extra point try that actually wasn’t. Even after officials reviewed the play, the wrong call was upheld.

After reviewing the play, Big East officials called it good. Toledo quickly marched down the field, but after getting as close as the eight-yard line they had to settle for a field goal with just three seconds left on the clock. Had the PAT call gone the other way, it would have won the game. Instead, it sent the game to overtime.
The Rockets fall to 1-3, but that doesn’t tell half the story. Sandwiched between last week’s 40-15 beatdown by Boise State are two extremely close losses against tough opponents, including a 27-22 loss to Ohio State on Sept. 10. If they continue to play as well as they have to date, they’ll pad their record once they start conference play in the MAC next week.
