In front of a rapidly depleting Heinz Field crowd, the Pittsburgh Panthers held off the No. 16 South Florida Bulls to establish themselves as the Big East team to beat, technically. The 44-17 victory ends USF's unbeaten start and makes up for at least part of Pitt's rough early going.
Pittsburgh Vs. USF Final Score: Panthers Rock Bulls In Big East Opener, 44-17
Even against FAMU, a team the Bulls beat 70-17, defensive concerns cropped up. Thursday night, South Florida's defense was completely slashed, with running back Ray Graham responsible for most of the damage. The diminutive playmaker racked up 268 yards from scrimmage and 303 all-purpose yards, plus a pair of touchdowns.
Pitt quarterback Tito Sunseri was sacked three times, according to Panthers traditions, but still threw for a miserly 6.5 yards per attempt on 33 tries, plus a score and nary an interception.
USF is now 0-7 all time on Thursday nights.
