Isaiah Ross Injury: Maryland Starter Faces Surgery

Maryland’s starting defensive end Isaiah Ross will reportedly undergo surgery, putting the rest of his season, and Maryland’s defense, in jeopardy.

Maryland Terrapins defensive end Isaiah Ross will reportedly undergo surgery following an injury sustained in the team's victory over Miami Monday night. Head coach Randy Edsall wouldn't comment on the nature of the injury, but according to the Washington Post, he was favoring his leg when he came off the field.

Ross was the Terps' starting defensive end, a position which already had depth issues after last year's starter, Justin Anderson, underwent foot surgery before the season. The starters on the line are solid, as Joe Vellano, A.J. Francis and David Mackall are all talented pass rushers — and Vellano is apparently the second coming of Ed Reed — but after them, the situation is desperate.

Ross will likely be replaced by Bradley Johnson, the only remaining D-lineman on the roster with any experience. Johnson, while also a talented pass rusher, is only 220 pounds. The other defensive end on roster, Keith Bowers, is officially listed as Ross' backup, but he's a true freshman, so I don't think it's likely he'll get the start in the Terps' next tilt, Sept. 17 against West Virginia.

Edsall didn’t say how long Ross would be out, or if he would return this season at all.

Backup tight end Dave Stinebaugh also left Monday's game with an injury, and he will also require surgery. He's done for the year, according to Edsall.
