Compass Bowl 2012, SMU Vs. Pitt Score Update: Mustangs Hold 21-3 Lead At Halftime

The 2012 BBVA Compass Bowl between the SMU Mustangs and the Pittsburgh Panthers is underway. Through the first half of play, the game has been decidedly lopsided. Heading into halftime, the Mustangs lead, 21-3.

The Panthers defense managed to settle down in the second quarter, after allowing 21 unanswered points by the Mustangs in the first 15 minutes of play.

Pitt finally got on the board in the opening minutes of the second quarter, as a six-play, 40-yard drive by the Panthers ended in a 32-yard field goal. That would be the closest either team would get to scoring until the final three seconds of the half, when Pitt kicker Kevin Harper attempted a 47-yard field goal. The attempt would clang off the top of the uprights, leaving Pitt with just 3 points in the first half.

The offensive yardage and time of possession is beginning to even out, but the massive first quarter by SMU may prove to be the difference in this one.
