Oklahoma Spring Game Results: Freshman Trey Metoyer Sparkles

The Oklahoma Sooners football team was on display Saturday during their annual Red-White Spring Game and, despite the fact that head coach Bob Stoops is bringing back once-hyped Landry Jones for his senior season, much of the buzz after the final horn sounded was over freshman wide receiver Trey Metoyer, who enrolled in the spring semester.

Metoyer caught six balls for 72 yards and drew rave reviews from Stoops, who said Metoyer’s performance was no surprise considering the spring he had been putting together.

“(Metoyer) just has got incredible hands and the ability to make plays,” Stoops said. “He has a knack for adjusting to the football. He can run. He really relishes the moment. He is a competitor for a young guy. He is a player. He just has a natural feel for it, on spacing and how to make plays and get to the ball. All of those things.”

Jones, in fact, just played one drive, which came as a surprise to some of the reporters in attendance. They asked offensive coordinator Josh Heupel to explain the decision to do so.

“The first drive took quite a bit of time off the clock so we went half of a quarter,” Heupel said. “The first drive ended in a positive way. I would’ve obviously liked to get 7 instead of 3. I felt like it was a positive first drive, took him out and gave (the backup) guys a bunch of work.”

Perhaps most importantly, it appears Oklahoma was able to close out spring practice without a major injury.
