The Clemson Tigers' second-leading rusher, who was expected to play a prominent role in the team in 2012 if he could stay academically eligible, has been dismissed from the university. Freshman running back Mike Bellamy has been ruled academically ineligible for the upcoming fall semester and will enroll in a junior college.

Clemson head coach Dabo Sweeney spoke about Bellamy’s dismissal in a release by the school.

“We gave him the opportunity to return to school in January and to grow as a player and a person and by all accounts from his teammates and coaches, he was doing well. But, in the end, he came up short academically. We wish him well and hope he can get back on track in the classroom and continue his football career at a junior college this fall.”

Bellamy rushed for 343 yards and three touchdowns on 57 carries while backing up Andre Ellington in 2011. That averaged out to an impressive 6.0 yards per carry and one of his touchdown runs was for 75 yards.
