Virginia Officially Announces Transfer of Phillip Sims

What was known and expected for a few days was made official today: Former Alabama Crimson Tide backup quarterback Phillip Sims has transferred to Virginia, according to a release from the school.

With the move to the Virginia Cavaliers, Sims -- a former Parade All-American and All-USA Today selection who hails from Chesapeake, Va. -- is now in a position to be a full-time starter for the rest of his college career.

He will have two years of eligibility remaining after he sits out the 2012 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

With Alabama winning the national championship with A.J. McCarron under center, the writing was on the wall that there was going to be no quarterback controversy going forward. McCarron was going to be the starter and Sims -- who appeared in eight games as a redshirt freshman in 2011 -- was going to be the backup as long as he was enrolled in Tuscaloosa.

Now, a local boy can re-energize a program that has not won a conference championship since 1995.

Sims will join former Oscar Smith High School teammates Perry Jones and Tim Smith in Charlottesville.
