Jim Delany Wanted To Play Role In Hiring Coaches, According To Report

In addition to the ability to fire coaches, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany reportedly also wanted to be able to hire coaches.

Thursday, we found out about the proposal that would give Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany the authority to fire coaches. While that power would be unprecedented, it apparently wasn’t the only authority he wanted. Delany was also seeking the ability to play a role in coaching hires, according to a report by Brad Wolverton of the Chronicle Of Higher Education.

Delany was said to have outlined an idea to a Big Ten athletic official that would give him the ability to assist schools in new hires. Less than pleased with some recent hires, Delany wanted to “play a critical role in hiring decisions.” The thought is, as an unbiased party, Delany could help schools and protect them from influences such as boosters and campus politics.

The plan didn’t make it very far, as Delany reportedly only told one person, but the concept is a drastic one and unlike anything else in college sports.
