Hakeem Nicks finished his career at the University of North Carolina as the single-season record holder for receiving yards and the career leader for receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. Those records will now come with an asterisk because Nicks was ineligible during his final season, according to a report from Newsobserver.com.
Hakeem Nicks Played While Ineligible For Academic Fraud At UNC
Hakeem Nicks’ records at UNC will now come with an asterisk after it was determined he played while being ineligible.
Nicks was ineligible during the 2008 season for receiving improper academic help. His name had previously come up in the NCAA’s investigation into UNC for providing “impermissible assistance” to then-current UNC players.
Now a receiver for the New York Giants, Nicks caught 181 passes for 2,840 yards and 21 touchdowns during his career at UNC.
According to the NCAA report following its investigation, Nicks was one of six UNC football players from 2008-2010 to compete while ineligible. As part of its punishment, the UNC football program will be docked scholarships and be banned from postseason play in 2012, including the ACC Championship game. The Tar Heels will also be forced to vacate all wins from the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
