One of the greatest players in Texas history is now recognized as one of the greatest players in college football history: Vince Young has been inducted in the SB Nation College Football Hall of Fame. A Heisman candidate who played a key role in winning one of the greatest college football games of all time. A guy who passed or ran for 81 touchdowns in his career and had two 1,000-yard rushing seasons as a quarterback. Yeah, this one was pretty easy for our selection committee, which unanimously selected Vince Young to be in the College Football Hall of Fame. (Each committee member was given five votes, so a unanimous selection means Young got one of the five votes from each member.)

Here’s some of what Longhorns blog Barking Carnival, who nominated Young, had to say:

30-2 record as starter. 2005 Manning, Davey O’Brien, Maxwell Awards. #2 in Heisman Trophy voting. ... Arguably the greatest big game QB in NCAA history. 2 Time Rose Bowl MVP (only non Pac 10/Big 10 player to hold distinction). 1st QB to ever pass for 3000+ yards and rush for 1000+ yards in a single season. ... No. 1 in NCAA Passing Efficiency in 2005. Passed for 6,040 yards and rushed for 3,127 in college career, totaling 81 TDs passing/receiving. Finished with insane 6.8 yards per carry career rushing average -- best in Big 12 history among QBs/RBs.

So Vince Young has now earned what ought to be (but probably will not be) remembered as one of the greatest distinctions in the history of our sport: He is the first inductee in the SB Nation College Football Hall of Fame.

The SB Nation College Football Hall of Fame is a summer project involving all of the network’s excellent college football blogs. Each community nominated five of its own for inclusion, with 10 of those nominees being inducted by our selection committee, which included reps from most FBS conferences. The inaugural class’ first 10 will be revealed Monday and Tuesday, while the remaining 10 will be chosen by public vote Wednesday and Thursday.
