Rutgers Names Gary Nova Starter Over Chas Dodd
Sophomore Gary Nova earned the starting job at quarterback after a camp-long open competition with Chas Dodd, head coach Kyle Flood said Monday.

The two players shared starting duties last season. Nova, then a true freshman, started five games, while Dodd started the other eight. Neither truly outplayed the other in 2011. The team was 6-2 in games Dodd started, including a victory in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. Nova carried the team to a double-overtime win against Syracuse in relief of Dodd.
Dodd, who was a starter as a true freshman in 2009, had trivially better passing numbers and has an extra year of experience, but the two were in open competition throughout camp, and head coach Kyle Flood named his starter Monday morning following a team scrimmage Saturday night.
The Scarlet Knights will open against Tulane Sept. 1, Flood’s first game as head coach.
