On Tuesday morning, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive announced the suspension of Ole Miss freshman defensive back Trae Elston for what the conference describes as "a flagrant and dangerous act" that occurred late in the team's game on Saturday against UTEP.

In a press release, the SEC cited Rules 9-1-3 and 9-1-4 of the NCAA Football Rule Book, which read: “No player shall target and initiate contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet,” and “No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, elbow or shoulder.”

The hit occurred with just over three minutes left in the game, as the UTEP Miners attempted to score and cut into a 28-10 Ole Miss lead. Video of the hit can be seen below:

With the suspension, Elston will be ineligible for play when the Mississippi Rebels take on the No. 17 Texas Longhorns on Saturday night. Elston has recorded seven tackles through two games as a reserve safety for the Rebels.
