Beginning in 2014, the ACC champion will likely be headed to the Orange Bowl for a matchup against either Notre Dame, an SEC team or a Big Ten team, according to a report from ESPN.com.

In the proposed deal, the ACC champion would play annually in the Orange Bowl, assuming it didn’t qualify for the national semifinals. Their opponent would be selected from a group which includes Notre Dame, a SEC team which didn’t qualify for the national semifinals or Champions Bowl or a Big Ten team not playing in the national semifinals or Rose Bowl. If the ACC champion qualified for the national semifinals, another team from the conference would receive the Orange Bowl bid.

While the ACC already has a tie-in with the Orange Bowl, the new deal would likely provide a regular high-profile opponent. Previously, the Orange Bowl had a tie-in with the Big East, which led to some less than ideal matchups. Last week, Notre Dame announced it would join the ACC in non-football sports and play five games a year against ACC schools in football.
