Sam Durley, a quarterback for NCAA Division III Eureka College, set an NCAA record with 736 passing yards Saturday in a 62-55 win over Knox College. Durley broke the previous record of 731 yards, which was set by Zamir Amin of Menlo College in 2000.

Durley apparently had no idea he was even in the neighborhood of a record-setting performance while the game was going on. From The Pantagraph Newspaper in Bloomington, Ill.:

“I thought maybe high 300s,” Durley said of his yardage total. “We were so focused on driving down the field and getting the win. They told me afterward and I was pretty speechless. It’s definitely something that’s pretty cool.”

Durley’s record-setting total, even more impressively, came on just 34 completions. He was 34-for-52 passing. Six different players caught passes and five of them had 79 receiving yards or more for the game, including two receivers who had more than 200 yards each.

Eureka’s coach Kurt Barth, who also coached the senior quarterback in high school, noted that the team spent the second half in the hurry-up offense and that Durley was calling many of his own plays at the line:

“He was calling everything on his own,” Barth said. “He did a fantastic job of seeing the field and reading the defense. I’ve been with Sam for eight years and it was by far the best game he’s played.”
