The LSU Tigers, coming off a ho-hummer in their season opener last week, welcome another underdog into Death Valley when they host the Washington Huskies Saturday night (7 pm ET, ESPN).
LSU opened as a 23-point favorite for Saturday night’s game at most online sportsbooks tracked by OddsShark.com, but as of Friday afternoon had been boosted to -24. Meanwhile, the total opened at 53 and continues to be one of the most lopsided betting options in all of college football Saturday with lots of action on the OVER.
Louisiana State, with 13 starters back this year from the team that lost the BCS national championship game last January, opened this season with a 41-14 win over North Texas on Aug. 31. The Tigers grabbed an early 24-0 lead and coasted from there and face a more manageable spread here.
LSU outgained the Mean Green 508-219, but could not cover the spread as 42-point favorites. The Bayou Bengals come into this game ranked No. 3 in both the major polls.
Washington, meanwhile, with 13 starters back after going 7-6 last year, opened its season last week with an underwhelming 21-12 win over San Diego State. The Huskies grabbed an early 14-0 lead, then held on as the offense shut down.
After the first quarter, U-Dubs’ only other score came by its defense on a fumble return in the third quarter. Washington got outrushed by the Aztecs 199-106 and couldn’t cover the pointspread as 15-point favorites.
The Huskies also took a couple of hits when RB Jesse Callier and OL Ben Riva went down and out with injuries. Callier is out for the season with a torn ACL while Riva, with a broken arm, is out for the foreseeable future.
These two teams last met three seasons ago, when the Tigers went up to Seattle and beat the Huskies 31-23.
Free NCAAF Pick: This game has the makings of a real blowout. Washington has a depleted running back corps and an iffy defense, while LSU has no mercy. We’ll give the points and go with the Tigers here.
