Saturday afternoon's game at Kinnick Stadium certainly wasn't pretty as the Iowa State Cyclones and Iowa Hawkeyes battled for sixty minutes to score just 15 points between them. In the end, though, it was the Cyclones emerging victorious with a 9-6 victory over their in-state rivals on the road.
Iowa State Vs. Iowa Final Score: Cyclones Win In A Slugfest
Despite what the scoreboard might indicate, there was actually a touchdown scored in Iowa City on Saturday afternoon as Steele Jantz connected with Aaron Horne for a five-yard touchdown early in the first quarter to give the Cyclones a lead they'd never relinquish. Unfortunately Edwin Arceo was unable to get his extra point try through the uprights, however, leading to the 9-6 score.
The game featured six total turnovers with Iowa State contributing four -- two fumbles and a pair of interceptions thrown by Jantz -- but Iowa was plagued by turnovers and general ineffectiveness on the offensive end to end their undefeated season just two games into the year.
Box Score Hero: There weren’t a lot of neat statistics in the game, but Horne’s line of six receptions for 73 yards and the game-winning score probably made him the box score hero.
Rankings Ramifications: Probably none. Neither team was ranked heading into the game and they likely won’t be after this “game,” either.
But Did They Cover? Nope. Iowa was actually the favorites by about five points.
Next Week’s Schedule: Iowa State will look to continue its undefeated season against Western Illinois at Jack Trice Stadium while Iowa will look to get back on track against Northern Iowa at home.
