The East-West Shrine Game had its first practice in pads on Wednesday, so scouts had a better read of the draft prospects. See who impressed and who disappointed on the West squad’s third day of practice:
East-West Shrine Game 2013 practice report: Keenan Davis, Keith Pough among standouts
The East-West Shrine Game concluded its Wednesday practices, so let’s look at who stood out, for better or worse.
Alfie Crow (SB Nation)
* Mount Union wide receiver Jasper Collins had a much better day of practice. CBS Sports' Dane Brugler notes that the Division III star matched up well with cornerback Terry Hawthorne and was also returning punts. Collins is turning heads early in the draft process.
* Another small school star is Howard linebacker Keith Pough. Eric Galko of Optimum Scouting is very high on him and was impressed again on Wednesday, stating "He has consistently shown thus far this week that he can pick up running backs well in coverage, and has opened up with his hips very well to deep coverage. He's reacting and bursting in coverage well too. Combine those two skill sets I didn't know he had with his intense leadership this week, and he may be a team-by-team favorite."
* Keeping with the small school theme, Montana State defensive end Caleb Schreibeis was “the most impressive defensive lineman”, according to Galko. He goes on to say that Schreibeis was extending away from his body well to drive his legs with good pad level, attacked the edge well, and stunted inside very well with speed/pad level.”
* Iowa wide receiver Keenan Davis put in another great practice and is shaping up as one of the best offensive talents in the game. Galko believes he "could be a fantastic interior-working receiver" in the NFL.
* Notre Dame safety Zeke Motta is still looking good, and Galko states that he's "showing a wide range of skill sets I didn't know he had. I like Motta quite a bit before this week, and he's shown the ability to fit in multiple roles now."
