2014 NFL Draft order: No. 1 pick remains in play

The Texans may be in the midst of a 13-game losing streak, but they still haven’t secured the first pick in the draft.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Despite there being only one week left in the NFL season, the No. 1 pick in the 2014 draft remains undetermined.

The Houston Texans, with a 2-13 record, currently hold the top pick. The Washington Redskins, at 3-12, have the second-worst record in the league.

However, if the Redskins lose to the New York Giants next week and the Texans beat the Tennessee Titans, the Redskins would finish with the worst record due to strength of schedule. Currently, through the afternoon games in Week 16, the Redskins have a .518 full season strength of schedule. The Texans are at .553.

For teams with the same record, the draft order is determined by strength of schedule. The team with the lower strength of schedule will have the higher pick in the draft.

The Redskins’ first-round pick goes to the St. Louis Rams as the final piece of the Robert Griffin III trade.

Of course, it’s all a moot point if Houston loses to Tennessee next week. While the Texans did beat the Titans 30-24 in Week 2 of the season, they have lost 13 consecutive games.
