Expect to see a lot of quarterbacks throwing the ball at the NFL combine this year. Geno Smith and Matt Barkley are both expected to throw the ball as part of their combine workout, and others will likely follow. It is not always a guarantee that the top quarterback prospects will throw at the combine; some years they may have more to lose than they have to gain.

Last year neither Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III threw the ball at the combine, as they had the top two spots locked up. This is not the case this year as top quarterback prospect Smith will go through a full workout at the combine according to his agent Jeff Nalley, via Gil Brandt of NFL.com. Barkley is also going to throw at the combine according to a report from ESPN's Bill Williamson.
Luck and RG3 had the luxury of waiting until their pro days to showcase their throwing skills, but with the status of the 2013 quarterback class much more up in the air, today’s QB hopefuls have no such luxury. With Smith and Barkley agreeing to throw, it is expected that the other quarterbacks at the combine will follow suit.
Smith is considered the top quarterback prospect after a senior season at West Virginia in which he threw for over 4,000 yards and 42 touchdowns to just six interceptions. Smith is still projected as the top pick by Mocking the Draft, but a strong combine showing could help him lock down that position. After choosing to skip the Senior Bowl, scouts are eager to see how Smith performs in front of NFL coaches. Barkley, out of USC, was considered the top prospect entering the year, but struggled to reach expectations and suffered a shoulder injury at the end of the season.
