NFL Combine 2013: League adds aptitude test as counterpart to Wonderlic

Because NFL prospects need one more test.

Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

The 300-plus NFL hopefuls in Indianapolis next week will have one more test added to their itinerary.

According to Albert Breer of NFL.com, the league plans to add a second aptitude test in addition to the age-old Wonderlic, an intelligence test that has taken its fair share of criticism over the years.

For more on this story, check out Mocking the Draft.

The test will not outright replace the Wonderlic, but rather the league wants to use it as a complement to the old test, according to Breer.

Over the years, the Wonderlic has been used, fairly or unfairly, as a means to judge a player’s intelligence. While the scores aren’t generally released to the public, certain scores seem to leak out every year.

Most recently, former LSU cornerback and current Dallas Cowboy Morris Claiborne had his score leaked and took a beating in the media for his low scores. Vince Young was also criticized for his low scores a few years earlier.

The new test was developed by a university professor, and the league hopes it will be a “little more evolved” than the Wonderlic, according to Breer.

Just like the NFL continues to get bigger and bigger, so to does the NFL Scouting Combine. From the media coverage to the increasing number of tests and measurements, the combine process is more thorough than ever.
