Mike Mayock: Teams will have tough time trading down in 2013 NFL Draft

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock doesn’t see a huge difference between pick No. 5 and pick No. 25 in this year’s draft.

The top of the 2013 NFL Draft isn't special. Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III aren't sitting at the top of the board, and neither is Jadeveon Clowney, the early consensus top prospect for 2014's draft.

For that reason, fans of the teams drafting in the top five or 10 picks all seem to be clamoring for their favorite teams to trade down in the draft. The problem is, teams may not be looking to trade up. As NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock mentioned in a conference call on Monday, this draft is pretty flat and teams may have a tough time moving back.

“I wouldn’t want a top-10 pick in this draft,” Mayock said. “The fifth pick and the 25th pick are very similar. I think a lot of teams will be looking to trade down. Not sure how many teams will be looking to trade up.”

With a lack of fire power at quarterback and a handful of quarterback-needy teams at the top of the draft, an interesting dynamic will develop. It’s tough to say at this point how the top 10 will shake out. A lot of questions still need to be answered.

While the 2013 NFL Draft may lack the star power at the top that we have seen in recent years, it’s important to note that this year’s crop is as deep as any in recent memory. Players that can start should be available well into the draft’s second day.
