2013 NFL Combine: Will Bjoern Werner hurt or help his stock?

Defensive end Bjoern Werner might see his stock drop if he doesn’t have a strong performance at the Scouting Combine this week.

USA TODAY Sports

When the mock drafts kicked into high gear proper following the end of the NFL's postseason, Florida State defensive end Bjoern Werner was going relatively high. Some mocks still have Werner going as high as the No. 2 overall pick, held by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Others have him going at No. 3 to the Oakland Raiders, while the most recent mock draft from Dan Kadar of SB Nation has him going at No. 10 to the Tennessee Titans.

Why is Werner no longer going near the absolute top of most mocks around the Internet? Well, many are starting to discover some bad tape from Werner, who possesses just average athleticism and pass rushing ability, to go along with what might not be a high motor.

In fact, over at Draft Insider, they suggest that Werner has “not looked like a super athlete,” in training over the past few weeks. They go on to say that many are “not expecting a great workout at the combine” from Werner. If true, Werner could significantly hurt his stock with a bad combine.

Pass-rushing defensive ends can get a lot from a combine workout, as they’re one of those very visual positions. But if you follow all of the latest buzz, Werner’s stock might just be trending low.

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock had a national conference call on Monday and he said that Werner is not worthy of a top-10 selection in the draft.

"I'm not as high on these guys as some people are. For instance, I don't think Bjoern Werner or Damontre Moore are top-10 players," Mayock said. "They might go in the top 10, but I don't see it that way."

Still, Werner has an awful lot of potential and he’s a very complete player. He may not have the wow factor to some, but as noted in SB Nation’s scouting report from Matthew Fairburn, Werner could be a star with the right coaching in the NFL.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.
