2013 NFL Scouting Combine: Marquise Goodwin looking to break record in 40-yard dash

Goodwin said the fastest time he has run was a 4.24, which just so happens to be the record set by Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson back in 2008. Make no mistake, Goodwin knows the record and wants to break it.

“I want to run the fastest ever,” Goodwin. “Chris Johnson has the record. That’s my goal.”

Despite Goodwin’s high expectations in the track-style events at the NFL Combine, he’s out to prove he’s not just a track star playing football.

“I’m a football player who just happens to jump really far,” Goodwin said. “Really looking to prove I’m more than just a speed guy, just to show that I can catch the ball away from my body. Anybody can run the 40.”

Goodwin wasn’t the most productive player during his career at Texas. He had only 340 receiving yards as a senior. But he showed improvement during the week of practices at the Senior Bowl. He thinks the ability has always been there and wasn’t afraid to answer questions about his lack of production as a Longhorn.

“It’s all about opportunity,” Goodwin said. “When the ball was in my hands, I did something with it.

While Goodwin’s time in the 40-yard dash will be one of the main attractions of the weekend, Minnesota Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said teams need to proceed with caution when looking at drills.

“You have to be careful getting too caught up in numbers,” Frazier said. “Players will tell you a lot. At certain positions it’s vitally important, but you hope it doesn’t detract from what a guy’s done on tape.”

As for how fast Goodwin thinks he will run, he wouldn’t put a number on it.

“Really fast,” he said with a laugh.
