2013 NFL Combine: John Elway calls this year’s QB class ‘hit or miss’

There’s no Andrew Luck or RGIII this year. Heck, there’s not even a Russell Wilson. Denver Broncos Vice President John Elway says this year’s QB class is much weaker than last.

The quarterbacks in the 2013 NFL Draft have quite a lot to live up to, and some big names in the NFL, most recently John Elway, have serious doubts they can. Three rookies from the 2012 draft class — Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson and Robert Griffin III — led their teams to the playoffs, and rookies Ryan Tannehill, Kirk Cousins, Brandon Weeden and Nick Foles started games for their new teams.

Some think that no quarterback this year deserves a first-round pick. While that probably won’t happen, Elway said this year’s crop is much harder to predict than last year’s. From USA Today:

“There were two or three guys [last year] that came in and made huge impact. And now you look at it, and there’s not one guy that’s jumping out at everybody at that position,” Elway said Friday. “It’s hit or miss with who is coming out.”

It’s easy to see where Elway’s coming from. Matt Barkley and Geno Smith were once looked at as can’t-miss prospects, but ho-hum senior years have raised questions about their NFL futures, and no one else has distinguished himself.
