NFL Combine 2013: Adversity helped shape Tyler Wilson

Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson learned a lot about himself when the Razorbacks failed to meet expectations during his senior season.

Tyler Wilson could be one of the first quarterbacks selected in the 2013 NFL Draft despite struggling through a tough senior season at Arkansas. Wilson's numbers slipped and his Razorbacks fell from a top-five preseason ranking to a 4-8 record, but Wilson believes those struggles helped make him more ready for the NFL.

“I think that’s what separates the good players from the average ones, how they come to work each day when all the chips aren’t on the table,” Wilson said of his senior year. Wilson further discussed the benefits of adversity. “When the dumpster is turned upside down so to speak, it’s about how you react to it. And I felt it was my responsibility along with a lot of the senior guys to keep the program together.”

Wilson threw for 3,387 yards, 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions as a senior, all down from his junior year when Arkansas finished 11-2. Still, Wilson believes his decision to return to school was the right one, saying, “I wanted to walk into the NFL as mature as I could possibly be and I think that year gave me that opportunity.”

Despite the struggles, Wilson impressed scouts, performed well in Senior Bowl practices and could be selected in the first round of the draft.
