NFL pro day results: Oregon State, Kansas highlight Friday

Jayhawks quarterback Dayne Crist and Beaver corner Jordan Poyer suited up for drills.

USA TODAY Sports

Five schools held pro days on Friday, with San Jose State, Georgia Southern and Georgia State joining Oregon State and Kansas in showcasing their prospective NFL talent.

Oregon State

Seventeen NFL scouts were in attendance in Corvallis, Ore.

With late-first-round upside, cornerback Jordan Poyer used the Beavers' pro day to improve on his performance from February's NFL Combine. He succeeded in increasing his bench press, pushing 225 pounds 11 times, whereas in Indy he managed only eight. His 28 1/2-inch vertical was a whole 2 inches below his jump last month, but his broad jump stayed steady at 9'7.

Likely a mid-round pick, wide receiver Markus Wheaton declined to run measurable drills. He did, however, run receiver drills to some acclaim, with NFL.com's Gil Brandt saying Wheaton "caught the ball well, but had some trouble tracking the ball overhead." In his senior season, the Chandler, Ariz., native complied 1,244 receiving yards and 13 total touchdowns.

Kansas

Potential NFL-camp invitee Dayne Crist showed some strength from the quarterback position. He completed 15 reps of 225-pound bench press and ran a 4.97 40-yard dash. The 6'4 former Jayhawk weighed in at 239 pounds and jumped 29 inches in the vertical and 8'11 in the broad jump.

Less successful in the bench was offensive lineman Tanner Hawkinson, who pushed only 13 reps in his only measurable drill of the day. The tackle and probable late-round pick stood tall at 6'5 and weighed in at 298.

San Jose State

Tight end Ryan Otten showed off his athleticism at the Spartans' pro day, with his best 40 time clocked at 4.65 according to DraftInsider's Tony Pauline. Otten, who projects in the third or fourth round, did 17 reps on the bench press and jumped 33 inches in the vertical. As for his hands, Pauline tweeted "good in pass catching drills," which rounded out an impressive day.

Georgia State

Running back Donald Russell pushed 23 reps on the bench press and ran 40-yard dashes of 4.54 and 4.58. Russell ran for 1,400 yards and 13 touchdowns across two seasons after transferring from Kentucky.

Defensive back D'Mario Gunn tweaked his hamstring during his 40, so no time was recorded. But he did 14 reps at the bench press and will participate in a regional combine on Sunday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Georgia Southern

Safety J.J. Wilcox declined to run drills and was only measured at his pro day. He was weighed and measured, standing 6’ 5/8 and weighing in at 216 lbs.
