NFL Draft 2013: Jets interested in Geno Smith

The list of potential suitors for the West Virginia quarterback continues to grow.

Chris Graythen

West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith is almost certainly going to be a top-10 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

The list of teams showing interest in Smith continues to grow, and the New York Jets are the latest team to do due diligence on the quarterback in the last month, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York.

The Jets came away from the NFL Scouting Combine unimpressed with Smith in the interview process but spent some extra time with him at West Virginia’s pro day, where the quarterback was more impressive.

The Jets currently have the No. 9 pick and are selecting behind the Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills, all of whom have shown interest in Smith as well. New York also signed David Garrard to compete with Mark Sanchez, who is not a lock to win the team's starting quarterback job, according to Jets coach Rex Ryan.

Given Sanchez’ cumbersome contract, the Jets may have trouble moving on from the signal caller this offseason and could be stuck with the mess of a quarterback situation through 2014.

If Smith somehow falls to No. 9, though, the Jets will have an interesting situation on their hands.
