2013 NFL mock draft: Damontre Moore to Miami Dolphins

Could a bad Combine workout land Damontre Moore across from Cameron Wake?

Once upon a time, Damontre Moore was considered a lock to be a first-round pick and one of the best prospects at any position in the 2013 NFL Draft. Then he bombed his Combine workout, running 4.95 in the 40 and throwing up a meager 12 reps on the bench press. Even still, this is a player that produced 38.5 tackles for loss and 21 sacks over the last two seasons with Texas A&M. Might one bad workout land Moore across the formation from one of the NFL’s elite pass rushers?

Kevin Nogle: "This was not my intended target at this point in the draft, but with the potential Moore has, and the fact that his poor bench press at the combine has allowed him to fall this far, I can’t pass him up. He will be the second pass rusher on the Dolphins, serving as the supporting role to Cameron Wake’s starring role, which will probably allow Moore to be successful early in his career as he continues to build his strength and develop more pass rushing skills. Learning from Wake can’t hurt.

"Moore saw success early in his career as the second pass rusher at Texas A&M with Von Miller as the primary threat to opposing quarterbacks. When he took over the top spot after Miller was drafted in 2011, Moore continued to develop and put up solid numbers as a rush linebacker in 2011 (17.5 TFL, 8.5 sacks) and then continued that growth as a junior in 2012 with 21 TFL and 12.5 sacks. His NFL career could follow that exact same pass as he develops under Wake, then can take over the top role whenever Wake (who turned 31 in January) retires.

"At this point, the Dolphins have filled two need areas within the draft, adding a cornerback in the first round and a defensive end in the second. Miami still has another second round pick, and eight more picks in rounds three through seven, so there are plenty of opportunities to address other areas of need."

Here’s our own Dan Kadar to break down the pick:

Although the perception on Moore has slipped considerably, he’s a good player. At one point rated in our top 10, Moore is an active pass rusher with a good motor. His timing skills are poor and he’s not a quick-twitch end. But it’s easy to forget in April how good Moore was during the season. With the amount of early picks the Dolphins own, they can afford to gamble on a pass rusher like Moore and hope he hits. At the worst, he should be a good left defensive end in the NFL.

Coming up at Noon ET: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Bucs Nation make their second-round pick. See you then!
