2013 NFL Draft: Eric Fisher, Luke Joeckel make history as picks 1 and 2

Early in the draft, teams were looking for ways to protect their quarterbacks.

For the first time in the modern history of the NFL Draft, offensive tackles were taken with the first two picks.

Following a day full of speculation, the Kansas City Chiefs took Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher first overall.

They were followed by the Jacksonville Jaguars, who took Texas A&M’s Luke Joeckel. With Eugene Monroe on the left side, Joeckel will likely start his career playing right tackle. The Jaguars and Monroe haven’t begun talks on a new contract, so Joeckel could be the team’s left tackle of the future.

Fisher’s ascent to the top of the NFL Draft really began at the Senior Bowl. There he turned heads as an athletic left tackle with good functional strength.

Andy Reid is known to prefer athletic offensive tackles. Out of the two, Fisher is the better fit.

“That would be a huge, huge honor, and obviously a dream complete and it would just open up another dream for me,” Fisher said about going No. 1 at the NFL Combine. “But anybody who would give me the chance to play football I’d really appreciate it, and I’d definitely work real hard to be successful on their team.”
