Plenty of drama on draft’s opening night

    Chris Chambers

NEW YORK - The first round of the 2013 NFL Draft was a sporting event, but only in the strictest sense of the word.

What unfolded at Radio City Music Hall on Thursday night was mostly pure drama. The first round provided a series of scenes more fit for the movie screen. And on a night during which Kevin Costner and company were filming scenes for their upcoming movie Draft Day, what could have been more fitting?

Geno Smith and people being stupid

    Al Bello

NFL people can sometimes seem like the dumbest humans on the planet. There’s just no other way to read this post about how Geno Smith needs to show up at the second round Friday to prove to the world he can handle the pressure.

Indeed. He avoided cameras Thursday and now he’s considering skipping Friday.

Mingo pick questioned, Steelers, Ravens get praise

    Al Bello

Some are questioning the Cleveland Browns’ decision to draft Barkevious Mingo, who didn’t fill a team need and wasn’t necessarily a safe pick, at No. 6. On the other hand, few have reservations about the picks made by the rest of the AFC North, with the Steelers and the Super Bowl Champion Ravens each selecting players who slipped for seemingly silly reasons.

Here’s a look at how experts and fanbases reacted to the AFC North’s selections. We looked at four graders: Rob Rang at CBS, Pete Prisco at CBS, Chris Burke at SI and WalterFootball.com.

Surprise: SEC wins NFL Draft’s 1st round

    Al Bello

College football’s best conference flooded the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night. Twelve players -- four of them in the top ten -- from the Southeastern Conference went off the board, tying the all-time first-round mark set by the ACC in 2006.

It also added to the conference’s lead in picks in recent history. Since 2000, the SEC now has had 540 players drafted, 85 more than the Big Ten, the second-place conference in that time span. Back in 2006, the ACC set the record for the most overall picks in one draft, with 51. Time will tell if the SEC gets there or not, but the conference is certainly off to a strong start. We’d expect nothing less.

    Grading the 1st round

    USA TODAY Sports

To assign NFL Draft grades immediately after the first round is an absurd exercise. Anything less than a positive write-up and clearly you’re an idiot. Regardless, here are my grades for the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

    Grade: B-

    Celebrating the MAC

    Al Bello

The Mid-American Conference is great. It may not produce football national championship teams, but it is consistently produces some of the most fun football you will watch all season.

It ended predictably, but the 2012 Huskies can hold their heads high after becoming the first MAC team to break into the BCS, going to the Orange Bowl, to Kirk Herbstreit’s dismay.

    Best players still available

    Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The first round of the 2013 NFL Draft has come to a close and several big names are still left on the board. Among the biggest-name players still remaining include West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith and Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o.

But neither is among our top three players available. At the top of our list is Florida State pass rusher Tank Carradine. He likely dropped out of the first round because teams are unsure about the health of his surgically-repaired knee.

    Fins, Vikes make Draft trades

    Al Bello

The 2012 NFL draft had six of the top 10 picks change hands. While there wasn’t quite as much trade activity in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft, teams looked to address their biggest needs -- while others were willing to accept less in order to move back.

Here’s a full look at all the trades in the first round:

    Travis Frederick selected by Cowboys

    Jeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

Frederick was somewhat of a surprise early-entrant into the NFL Draft, though it makes some sense when you consider that Frederick would have had to play under his fourth offensive-line coach in five seasons had he returned. Regardless, he is a polished center prospect, if not exactly the most awe-inspiring. Frederick is strong, technically sound, smart, experienced and comes with an all-important mean streak.

Frederick won’t impress anyone with incredible athleticism, however. He could be prone to getting beat by speed rushers at the next level. That said, his pedigree is impressive. It helps that Wisconsin seems to pump out pro-ready lineman on an annual basis.

    Alec Ogletree selected by Rams

    Daniel Shirey-US PRESSWIRE

One cause for concern was the reason Ogletree only played in 10 games, as he was suspended for the first four games of the season for violating team rules. He was also arrested in February for DUI, putting more stress on the concerns about his character.

Ogletree is an extremely athletic linebacker with great sideline-to-sideline speed that should fit in well with the Rams’ talented defense. With his speed, he could be an efficient pass rusher as well as a great run defender.

    Vikings trade up with Patriots

    Daniel Shirey-US PRESSWIRE

New England seems to find a way to move down and gain picks every year, and this year they came in with only five total selections. They now have an additional three picks to play with -- a total of eight. Bill Belichick will likely continue to use these selections to diversify the Patriots’ draft, and gain additional selections in 2014.

    Cordarrelle Patterson selected by Vikings

    Al Bello

Patterson, 22, only played one season at the FBS level but was considered the top junior college recruit heading into the 2012 season. He chose Tennessee over Auburn, Georgia and Ole Miss and in his one season in the SEC, he caught 46 passes for 778 yards and five touchdowns. He also scored one touchdown as a kick returner, one as a punt returner and three rushing touchdowns in 2012.

    Sylvester Williams selected by Broncos

    Geoff Burke

Williams quit football after high school but he got back into the game in junior college. He walked on at Coffeyville Community College after working in a factory and after two years he was an honorable mention JC All-American. Several major programs recruited him but he chose North Carolina. He then became one of the standout players on the Tar Heels’ defensive line.

The Broncos need help all over the defensive line, especially after the Elvis Dumervil debacle. They chose to address defensive tackle first, and Williams will instantly be a rotational player, if not a starter in 2013.

49ers get ‘benefit of the doubt’ for Reid pick

DeAndre Hopkins drafted by Texans with 27th pick

    Greg M. Cooper-US PRESSWIRE

In SB Nation’s scouting report on Hopkins, there are plenty of positives to take away from his game.

Hopkins had three solid seasons at Clemson, improving his statistical output each year before emerging as a star in 2012. He caught at least 50 passes in every season at Clemson, while snagging nine touchdowns in his freshman and sophomore seasons combined.

Jarvis Jones a ‘Dick LeBeau kind of guy’

    USA TODAY Sports

Steelers fans seem satisfied with the pick, if a bit muted. Here’s the take from Neal Coolong at Behind The Steel Curtain:

At 24, Jones is one of the oldest prospects in the draft. Once considered a top-5 pick, concerns over his spinal stenosis dropped him down to the middle of the first round. He’s a fairly decent pick for the Steelers’ aging defense.
