Not surprisingly, an Alabama team that won three out of the last four national titles had a few players good enough to get drafted, including three back-to-back-to-back in the first round. The record for players from a single school drafted in one year is 17, an honor belonging to Ohio State in the 2000 NFL Draft.
2013 NFL Draft Results: College powerhouses well represented this year
LSU basically had a whole defensive unit drafted, while Alabama’s back-to-back national champion team had a slew of selections as well.
Alabama kept hearing their players’ names called from the podium on all three days of the draft, too. By the time the event was over, the Crimson Tide had a school-record nine players selected, beating the eight Alabama players picked in 1987 when the draft was 12 rounds.
SEC rival LSU also had a strong draft, especially early and on the defensive side of the ball, where the Tigers had six players drafted in the first three rounds. That set an NFL Draft record for most defensive players selected from a school in a single draft. The Tigers kept on coming off the board in the later rounds, too, for a total of nine LSU draftees.
No school heard their name called more than Florida State, though. The Seminoles struck gold early when E.J. Manuel was picked in the first round, giving them the honor of having the first quarterback selected. By the end of the draft they had 11 players drafted, more than any other school.
While the Ivy league is nothing like the SEC or ACC, they were also represented at the draft. J.C. Tretter was the first Ivy Leaguer off the board, representing Cornell as a fourth-round pick by the Packers, followed by Harvard’s Kyle Juszczyk eight picks later. But the big news was Princeton, who had a player drafted for the first time since 2001 when Mike Catapano was selected in the seventh round by the Chiefs.
Colorado State-Pueblo earned the honor of most obscure school to produce a draft pick, when the ThunderWolves’ Ryan Jensen was picked by the Ravens in the sixth round.
