There’s no more interesting head coach in the NFL at the moment than Chip Kelly of the Philadelphia Eagles. While league observers debate the type of offense he’ll bring to the pro game, Kelly has also transitioned the Eagles to a 3-4 defense under the watch of defensive coordinator Bill Davis. In order to make that transition, reinforcements are needed.

No one is quite certain exactly what type of 3-4 system Chip Kelly is going to run in Philadelphia. The only known is that he prefers size in the front seven. That was evident in the release of Patterson and the signing of the powerhouse 330-pounds Sopoaga. Other than Cox next to him, the Eagles have little. That includes Cedric Thornton, second-year man Vinny Curry and free agent signing Clifton Geathers. An upgrade at the position would be smart. Although there are bigger players, Williams fits the size requirement. He’s a good playmaker and this is about the right value for him. A 3-4 end may not be a flashy pick, but Williams can help set the tone up front and free the linebackers up to rush the passer.
