2016 NFL mock draft: San Francisco 49ers snag OT Jason Spriggs

The Niners get another cog up front in the SB Nation writers mock draft.

In the first round of our 2016 SB Nation NFL writers mock draft, David Fucillo of Niners Nation selected Oregon defensive end DeForest Buckner for the San Francisco 49ers. He's staying with a lineman for his second-round pick, but looking on the other side of the ball.

37. 49ers: Jason Spriggs, OT, Indiana

Fucillo: I do not expect the 49ers to go QB in the first round in spite of what everybody thinks. My guess is they end up going Connor Cook in the second or Dak Prescott a little later in the draft. The 49ers' strong teams under Jim Harbaugh were built inside out from the trenches. Yes, Chip Kelly is not Jim Harbaugh, but I see Trent Baalke continuing to build from the trenches. Jason Spriggs would seemingly slot in at right tackle with Trenton Brown developing more into the swing tackle role. There are some other intriguing options, but it seems like Spriggs fills more of a simple best man available. Leonard Floyd, Emmanuel Ogbah and Will Fuller were all considered at this spot, but Spriggs is the pick.

Analysis: I completely agree with the thought behind what Spriggs' role in San Francisco could be. Brown is an interesting player, but better in that backup swing role. The issue with this pick is the offense Spriggs would be blocking in. A passing offense featuring a Blaine Gabbert to Torrey Smith combination does little to excite. At some point the 49ers need to add talent at the playmaking positions on offense. Cook and Fuller are in the second round for a reason, but either one would give San Francisco some firepower.
