2016 NFL mock draft: Tampa Bay Buccaneers pick up Emmanuel Ogbah

After taking one pass rusher in the first round of the SB Nation writers mock draft, the Buccaneers get another.

Rob Ferguson-USA TODAY Sports

Sander Philipse of Bucs Nation is back up for his second round selection in the SB Nation NFL writers mock draft. In the first round, he got the pass rusher the team needs in Eastern Kentucky’s Noah Spence. Considering who available and Tampa Bay’s generally bad pass rush, that wasn’t enough.

39. Buccaneers: Emmanuel Ogbah, DE, Oklahoma State

Philipse: Having drafted a risky, but very talented defensive end in the first round, the Bucs can't pass up the opportunity to draft another one in the second. Where Noah Spence's risk is primarily off the field, Emmanuel Ogbah's is almost entirely on the field, in his remarkably inconsistent film. Ogbah's a terrific athlete who flashes the ability to destroy offensive tackles, but too often gets stood up for no discernible reason. The Bucs are intrigued by Ogbah, though, and have taken every opportunity to meet with him and put him through workouts. They also have a a coach who's managed to turn inconsistent pass-rushers like Ogbah into superstars: Jay Hayes worked with Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins in Cincinnati. The downside: the Bucs will have to make do in the secondary, where Brent Grimes represents the only significant investment. They'll hope the boost to the defensive line will be enough to keep the defense competitive.

Analysis: That’s a good bit of analysis on Ogbah, who is a high-motor player with some technique issues to figure out. It may seem strange to pick another pass rusher here, but the options are light at cornerback. Arguably the two best available – Xavie Howard of Baylor and Artie Burns of Miami – don’t have value with the No. 39 pick. The other logical option is to take Texas Tech’s Le’Raven Clark and work him in at offensive tackle. Dan’s Top 5 players remaining
