2016 NFL mock draft: Green Bay Packers snag Joshua Perry

The revamping of Green Bay’s defense continues in the SB Nation NFL writers mock draft.

The rebuilding of the Green Bay Packers defense continues. In the first round of the SB Nation NFL writers mock draft, the Packers added Alabama defensive tackle Jarran Reed to help up front. In the second round, Tex Western of Acme Packing Co. continues to attack that side of the ball.

57. Packers: Joshua Perry, LB, Ohio State

Western: Finally, the Packers are able to find an inside linebacker who is a good value in the early rounds of the draft. Perry brings a rare blend of size and athleticism to this position, and enough coverage ability to make you believe he can grow into a three-down linebacker. Run support and sure tackling are certainly his strengths, but Dom Capers should also put him to use regularly as a blitzer. He should be a steadying presence in the middle of the defense for several years to come.

This move also ensures that Clay Matthews can return to a full-time role as an outside linebacker, which Mike McCarthy and company have hoped to do all offseason. Perry should end up pairing with Michigan’s Jake Ryan on the inside, with Ryan coming off the field in the dime package.

Analysis: Although Perry played more outside for Ohio State, he has the playing style to move inside in a 3-4 defense. He’s capable of filling gaps and is a powerful linebacker who rarely misses tackles. He has some experience covering tight ends, and did decently enough that Green Bay’s other linebackers may not be asked to do it. Perry is a little stiff moving around laterally, but that would be masked some playing on the inside.
