2017 NFL mock draft: Kansas City Chiefs land Davis Webb

The successor to Alex Smith is found in the California quarterback.

To take a quarterback or not take a quarterback? At some point in the 2017 NFL draft the Kansas City Chiefs will take a quarterback. But every time they’re on the clock they’ll be asking that question until they get one.

In the first round of the SB Nation NFL writers’ mock draft, four quarterbacks were taken before Joel Thorman of Arrowhead Pride was even able to get a pick in. Now in the second round he’s targeting a quarterback who has built some first-round momentum in the weeks leading up to day one of the draft.

59. Kansas City Chiefs: Davis Webb, QB, California

Thorman: The Chiefs need to come out of this draft with a quarterback of the future and Davis Webb is the highest rated one left on the board. Clearly there are some question marks, especially with his college offenses, or else he would be drafted in the first round. You’re basing this on what you hope he becomes, not what he is. That’s because Andy Reid believes he can coach up whoever they give him and that’s what he’ll do with Webb. Alex Smith is under contract for 2017 and 2018, depending, so this is the perfect developmental spot.

Analysis: Webb is far from a value pick for me. I have him rated as the 84th overall player in the NFL draft this year. However, if there is a position you reach on, it’s quarterback. The justification is simple. If Webb can be developed properly, it doesn’t matter where he was picked. Webb can sit for a year or two behind Smith, bulk up, and shed some of the air raid play style qualities he possesses. He’s the fifth quarterback in this class because he has a nice size/arm strength combination, is a quick decision maker in the pocket and has excellent ball placement.
