Super Bowl 2013: Patrick Willis and the 49ers ‘want it bad’

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis revealed details of his friendship with Ray Lewis at his first Super Bowl press conference on Sunday, but also made his message clear -- he’s there to win the Super Bowl.

USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis made it clear what he and the 49ers are in New Orleans for this week -- to win Super Bowl XLVII.

Willis held his first press conference of the week in New Orleans on Sunday night, not long after the 49ers landed in Louisiana.

Responding to a question regarding "the other 52" (Ray Lewis), Willis concluded his response to the media by saying, "the time is now... I want it bad, we want it bad, and we're just going to go out there and play."

Willis answered a slew of questions on Sunday night, but ultimately, his message was clear -- he’s there, and the 49ers are there, to win Super Bowl XLVII.

Still, Willis spoke about his decision to wear No. 52 in the NFL, after being specifically asked whether or not he picked it because of Ray Lewis. Willis dispelled that notion, saying he’s an “even number guy,” explaining that “52 sounds best,” but conceded that 52 was a number to “play up to,” since a great one was currently wearing that number in the NFL.

San Francisco’s linebacker revealed that he does have a relationship with Ray Lewis now, noting that he had always been a fan of Lewis’, even prior to their friendship. Willis told the media that their friendship started during the Pro Bowl of Willis’ rookie season, saying that Lewis was “passing some of his wisdom down.”

At the end of his press conference, Willis said the 49ers have structured their week exactly the same as any other week -- and that the only difference is the extensive media coverage.

Willis and the 49ers may “want it bad,” and may “just go out there and play,” but he and the Niners will have to deal with the media throughout the week -- especially Willis, who will undoubtedly be asked about his relationship with Lewis time and time again.
