Titans rookie QB Cam Ward’s first NFL TD pass broke every rule in the book of quarterbacking

Cam Ward was held without a touchdown pass in his NFL debut last week against the Denver Broncos.

But his first NFL touchdown pass served as a reminder of just why the Tennessee Titans made him the first-overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Titans faced a 3rd-and-goal just before halftime against the Los Angeles Rams, with the ball on the Rams’ 9-yard line. As the play began, the Rams dropped seven into coverage, and Ward did not have a quick option available.

As Rams pass rusher Tyler Davis started to apply the pressure off the right edge, Ward began to buy some time for his receivers downfield. The rookie QB retreated all the way back to the 29-yard line before flushing to his right.

That’s when he uncorked a throw across his body to the back left of the end zone, somehow landing in the waiting arms of fellow rookie Elic Ayomanor:

Let’s be clear about something: If you are a middle school or high school quarterback, these are not the kinds of decisions you should be making with the football. From retreating deep into the pocket to throwing late across his body, he breaks almost every rule of quarterback play here. So, do not do this young quarterbacks.

Unless you have a rocket for a right arm, which Ward certainly does.
