Some touchdowns in the National Football League just feel right.

Sunday’s touchdown pass from Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery to tight end Brock Wright is absolutely one of those touchdowns.

The Lions are in Cincinnati this Sunday to take on the Bengals, and took a 14-0 lead on this designed throw from Montgomery to Wright near the goal-line:

Why does this play make sense?

Montgomery was a dual-threat quarterback at Mt. Healthy High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, during his high school playing days. During his time in high school, Montgomery ran for 6,666 yards and 91 touchdowns. In his senior year alone, Montgomery ran for 2,707 yards and 41 touchdowns while throwing for 726 yards and another seven touchdowns.

He was named the Associated Press Division III state offensive player of the year during his senior season.

This homecoming was the first time Montgomery had a chance to play professional football at Cincinnati, and it took on extra importance for the Lions running back, as our friends at Pride of Detroit covered this week.

“I think it’s just going to be a rush of emotions,” Montgomery said. “I have never played in Cincinnati since leaving Cincinnati, which will be cool. Playing against the team that, when I grew up, that was the team, was like my team. That was a hometown kid. A bunch of my family members are coming.”

Sunday is also the first chance for his sister to see him play in person since a car accident last Valentine’s Day left her paralyzed from the neck down.

“I think this is really special for me because my sister gets to come to the game,” Montgomery said to Kay Adams this week. “Almost a year ago—maybe a year and a half—on Valentine’s Day, my sister got in a really bad car accident. Now she’s paralyzed from the neck down. She, obviously, can’t move, but this will be the first game that my sister can actually see me play with her own eyes. So I’m super, super excited about that, and I’m just happy that she’ll be able to be there.”

And she got to see the former quarterback throw a touchdown pass to boot.
