The Carolina Panthers might only be 2-3, but they’re drawing closer to getting back a player who could turn everything around for their offense. Second-year wide receiver Jalen Coker is practicing for the first time this season, as the team opens up his 21 day practice window, onboarding a return from injured reserve.
Carolina Panthers on the verge of getting back a difference maker that could change their season

Coker was sidelined with a quad injury in August, which came at the worst possible time as the receiver was shelved shortly following Carolina’s decision to trade Adam Thielen to Minnesota. It quickly took the Panthers from have an abundance of potential weapons for Bryce Young, to leaving the cupboard bare — with Carolina being forced to sign Hunter Renfrow after releasing him, just to have more bodied at the WR position.
Receiver woes have been the Panthers’ biggest issue this season. Rookie Tetairoa McMillan has been unquestionably brilliant, and is on pace for a 1,000+ yard season — but there is nobody else threatening in the passing game. This has led to double teams on McMillan, limiting his ceiling, while also vastly limiting the options for Bryce Young.
Coker was a huge bright spot in the 2024 season, and a mammoth reason why Young saw a resurgence in his play after returning from being benched. An undrafted free agent in 2024, Coker quickly developed a rapport with Young and became one of his favorite weapons, uniquely filling the role of a jumbo slot receiver, and an inside route runner in trips formations. This led to Coker amassing 370 receiving yards, and two touchdowns in seven games with Young under center.
The dynamic of the Panthers offense has been drastically altered with Coker out. Renfrow has had to play in the slot, with Brycen Tremayne being a poor man’s Coker as the jumbo slot in some packages, but still finding himself second on the team in receiving yards.
Head coach Dave Canales was adamant the team wouldn’t rush Coker back, despite how much they need him.
“We’re going to throw some (work)loads at him and kind of increase it each day to see where he’s at,” Canales said. “We’ll make the best decision for Jalen, make the best decision for the team as we go forward through this week.”
That 21-day practice window could mean that Coker sees the field against the Bills on October 26, with a final decision being made on his status ahead of Carolina’s game against the Packers on November 2. With the Panthers sitting at 2-3 in an open NFC South there’s a very real chance Carolina could find a way into the playoffs if they can just get a little lift on offense, and Coker is just what the doctor ordered.
