Chip Kelly, NFL’s highest-paid OC, fired by Raiders after just 11 games

The Las Vegas Raiders’ disappointing 2025 season took another turn following Sunday’s loss to the Cleveland Browns. Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, who had joined the team under new head coach Pete Carroll during the offseason, has been fired after just 11 games.

“I spoke with Chip Kelly earlier this evening and informed him of his release as offensive coordinator of the Raiders,” Carroll said in a statement released by the organization. “I would like to thank Chip for his service and wish him all the best in the future.”

When Kelly arrived in Las Vegas, he did so as the NFL’s highest-paid offensive coordinator. The Raiders gave him an annual salary of $6 million to lure him away from Ohio State, but the performance of his unit has not justified his price tag.

Through his 11 games at the helm, the Raiders are tied for last in the league in points per game (15.0) and 30th in yards (268.9). They scored three total touchdowns in their last three games.

Sunday’s home loss to the Browns was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Besides putting up just 10 points, the Raiders offense surrendered 10 sacks, was penalized five times, and turned the ball over once.

“We’re pretty disappointed about this one,” said Carroll after the game. “If you don’t score, you can’t win, and we couldn’t score. It was an incredible game of defense on both sides — their team, our team. The numbers are whatever. They’re next to nothing. We had opportunities to make big plays, and we didn’t hit them. Quarterback was under duress the entire time, so our ability to match up with their pass rush didn’t work out well.”

Kelly’s dismissal comes less than three weeks after the Raiders fired special teams coordinator Tom McMahon. The writing was on the wall, too, given the unit’s performance and the fact that Carroll was openly critical of his team’s offense in recent weeks.

Who will replace Kelly as interim OC has not been announced yet.
