Los Angeles Chargers starting quarterback Justin Herbert is slated to miss practice on Wednesday, days before the team is set to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in a pivotal game for both teams.

Herbert suffered a broken bone in his left hand during the Chargers’ Week 13 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. While he was able to return to the game on Sunday, and finished the afternoon having completed 15-of-20 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns along with an interception, he underwent surgery for the injury on Monday.
Speaking with Colin Cowherd on Tuesday, head coach Jim Harbaugh noted that while he has “a lot of things hanging on the wall here,” a medical degree was not among them, and that Herbert’s status for Monday Night Football would be left up to the doctors:
Meeting with the media on Wednesday Harbaugh provided a brief update, stating that while Herbert was not going to be practicing, he has not “missed a beat” since the surgery:
Harbaugh reiterated that the team will “see how the week goes” ahead of Monday night’s clash with the Eagles:
If Herbert does play, something to watch will be how much the Chargers will use him under center, and whether he would need to wear a cast. Aaron Rodgers returned to the lineup for the Pittsburgh Steelers last week with fractures in his left wrist, and played with a cast on his left wrist. Pittsburgh used him exclusively out of the pistol or the shotgun — all 36 of his snaps were in either the pistol or the shotgun — and that could be a consideration for the Chargers.
Herbert suffered his left hand injury on Los Angeles’ opening drive of the game, after operating under center on the first snap. When he returned to action early in the second quarter, every other snap came with Herbert in the shotgun.
Harbaugh mentioned that after the win.
“There’s some things that -- getting under center -- I thought that would be difficult,” Harbaugh said. “So, we were operating exclusively out of the shotgun.”
If Herbert can play, we might see a lot more of the shotgun on Monday Night Football.
