Myles Garrett NFL sack record tracker for Browns star chasing history

Let’s follow Myles Garrett’s pursuit of the NFL sack record.

It’s been an awful season for the Cleveland Browns in 2025, but at least there’s a silver lining to watch for in the remaining games of the season. Myles Garrett is chasing history after registering his 20th sack of the season against the Titans, putting him 2.5 away from tying the official NFL record for sacks in a season — with a very real chance of owning the title outright.

There are two records to keep an eye on here: First is 22.5 which is the official NFL record for single season sacks, currently held by T.J. Watt of the Steelers, who reached the mark in 2021, and Michael Strahan of the Giants, who reached the same number back in 2001. The second record, which is less important but still something to watch, is 23.0. This is the unofficial record which goes back to 1978, and is held by Al Baker of the Detroit Lions. This isn’t in the NFL record books because sacks didn’t become an individual tracked statistic until 1982, but because we have film of Baker’s record it’s widely regarded by football heads as the true NFL sack record.

Either way, Garrett needs less than one sack per game over the final four of the season to pass Watt and Strahan, tying Baker. This might seem like a lock, but there are a few factors to consider. While Garrett’s 20.0 sacks in 13 games is utterly preposterous, there has been variance in his performances. A total of 9.0 sacks came in two games against the Patriots in Week 8, and the Raiders in Week 11 — with there being four games early in the season where Garrett registered less than one sack.

This means it will very much be up to the quality of opponents and quarterbacks he faces over the next four weeks to determine whether or not he’ll hit this mark, and this is the slate he faces:

  • Caleb Williams (Week 15 at Bears): Sacked just 21 times this season, one of the best QBs in the NFL at escaping pressure
  • Josh Allen (Week 16 vs. Bills): Sacked 31 times this season, and on pace for a career-high in sacks taken
  • Aaron Rodgers (Week 17 vs. Steelers): Sacked just 20 times this season, which is largely a product of his quick release and natural aversion to pressure
  • Joe Burrow (Week 18 at Bengals): The Bengals have allowed 26 sacks this season, however Joe Burrow has been sacked seven times in four games as a starter

The odds are more or less in Garrett’s favor. These are all solid quarterbacks at evading pressure, but have subpar offensive lines. Circle the Bills game and Week 18 against the Bengals as being times where we could see this record really get broken.

It seems a foregone conclusion that Garrett will break the single season sack record, and it’s wild to think that could happen and he’ll never, ever sniff the MVP award because he plays on an awful team — not matter the history he’s able to make.
