Marshawn Lynch, Julian Edelman settle the score from Super Bowl 49

We got to go to Marshawn Lynch’s hometown and watch him race former Patriots WR Julian Edelman on golf carts. Really.

OAKLAND — It’s been more than a decade since Super Bowl 49, but everyone’s talking about it this week as we wait to see the current versions of the Patriots and Seahawks face off again on Super Bowl Sunday in San Jose. And Marshawn Lynch and Julian Edelman were no exception.

The two faced off to settle the score once and for all on a game Seahawks fans — and just about everyone else — largely think could have been won if Seattle had just let Marshawn run the dang ball instead of throwing what turned into one of the most infamous picks in Super Bowl history directly to Malcolm Butler.

The rules were very simple: This was a golf cart race in Oakland on 28th Street and Telegraph Avenue, and thanks to Starbucks, both Lynch and Edelman had to carry a full tray of venti iced coffees while driving a golf cart as quickly as possible. The winner would be the person who spilled the least coffee, and the results were really something.

Marshawn was my pick to win. First and foremost, he has extensive golf carting experience. Exhibit A:

And look, I’m not walking into Marshawn’s city and picking anyone but him to win any type of contest, and especially a contest that involves golf carting. And I was correct. Edelman gave it his best effort, but Marshawn brought home the win. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the event, thanks to Starbucks.

We didn’t get to speak to Marshawn after the race, but I want to tell you what he did instead: He walked around, talking to and thanking the crew, extras, and Seahawks and Raiders fans. Marshawn loves Oakland and the fans, and they all love him back. It’s really a beautiful thing.

Edelman was a fantastic sport about it, and took the time to talk to me about his heartbreaking loss, the rigged golf cart, how he managed to hold onto the ball after that huge hit from Kam Chancellor on that catch over the middle in Super Bowl 49, which team has the best WR group, and the one and only Super Bowl MVP from Kent State University’s dark horse Super Bowl 60 MVP pick.

We’ll see if Edelman’s right on Sunday when the Patriots and Seahawks meet up in San Jose for a Super Bowl 49 rematch.
