Super Bowl’s lowest-scoring games ever before Patriots-Seahawks

The Super Bowl often features offensive fireworks, but we’ve seen a few that have been defensive battles. Here are the 3 lowest scoring.

If you were expecting a defensive affair in Super Bowl LX, the first half has lived up to the billing.

The Seattle Seahawks scored a field goal on their opening drive of the game to take a 3-0 lead, but that has been half of the scoring so far as the first half of Super Bowl LX draws to a close with the Seahawks leading the New England Patriots by just 6-0 thanks to two field goals from Jason Myers late in the second quarter.

So that has us thinking: What are the three lowest scoring Super Bowls in Super Bowl history?

#3: Super Bowl IXPittsburgh Steelers 16, Minnesota Vikings 6

Super Bowl IX was played at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings. Similar to Super Bowl LX, the first half of Super Bowl IX was a true defensive struggle, as the only points came for Pittsburgh on a safety when Minnesota quarterback Fran Tarkenton was taken down in his own end zone.

The opening kickoff of the second half was fumbled by Minnesota fullback Bill Brown, giving the Steelers incredible field position. Pittsburgh capped off their next possession with a touchdown run from Franco Harris to give Pittsburgh a 9-0 lead.

The Steelers would go on to win by a final score of 16-9, for a total of 22 points.

#2 Super Bowl VIIMiami Dolphins 14, Washington Redskins 7

Super Bowl VII capped off a perfect 17-0 season for the Miami Dolphins.

But interestingly enough, it might be most remembered for how Washington scored their only points of the game, coming on this botched field goal attempt from Miami.

Garo Yepremian’s gaffe aside, the Dolphins took the win, and to date the only perfect season in NFL history.

That is a total of just 21 points.

#1 Super Bowl LIIINew England Patriots 13, Los Angeles Rams 3

Interestingly enough, the lowest-scoring Super Bowl in history featured the Patriots as well.

Tom Brady’s final Super Bowl win with New England came in Super Bowl LIII against the Los Angeles Rams. While Jared Goff and company had chances, the Rams offense never found the end zone. New England scored the lone touchdown of the game on a short plunge from Sony Michel, and wide receiver Julian Edelman — who caught 10 passes for 141 yards — took home Super Bowl MVP.
